Cost of college went up for all students at Rutgers University-Newark

In-state tuition and fees rose 2.3 percent for 2018-19 at Rutgers University-Newark, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

New Jersey residents paid $14,409 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $324 more than the $14,085 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 113.2 percent more than residents this year, or $30,717. Their price tag grew 2.3 percent from $30,026 in 2017-18.

About 94 percent of the school's undergraduate population are New Jersey residents. About 2 percent are residents of other states and 4 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 85 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 973 students received grants or scholarships totaling $13.5 million and 637 students took out student loans totaling more than $4.6 million.

Including all undergraduates (13,451), 6,252 students used grants or scholarships totaling $75.4 million, and 4,438 students took out $32.2 million in federal student loans.
