Census Bureau: 7.1% of people in Essex County identified as multiracial in 2021

Of the 852,720 citizens living in Essex County in 2021, 92.9% said they were only one race, while 7.1% said they were two or more races, according to U.S. Census Bureau data obtained in June.

The most prevalent racial group among citizens in Essex County who reported being of a single race in 2021 was African American, comprising 38.6% or 329,047 individuals. Following them, white accounted for 38% and totaled 323,837 individuals.

The percentage of multiracial residents in Essex County is 0.4% higher than the state average, which stands at 6.7%.
