FOIA Request to New Jersey Institute of Technology regarding Chinese National students on June 16, 2025.
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) by Newark Reporter, in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. The request seeks detailed information about Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.
The request specifically asks for documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments. If this information is protected, the requester has asked for a total number of such students, broken down by department. Additionally, the request includes a demand for records detailing scholarships received by these students, including amounts and sources.
Furthermore, the FOIA request seeks information on any scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council that have been awarded to these students. In addition to student-related data, NJIT is also asked to provide any policies or procedures related to monitoring students, including Chinese Nationals, to safeguard the university’s intellectual property and confidential information.
The Newark Reporter emphasizes its role in providing transparency and holding public institutions accountable through access to public records. They have requested a fee waiver as they are engaged in news gathering and reporting activities.
We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
