The New Jersey Devils have announced the signing of four players to professional tryout (PTO) agreements ahead of their upcoming training camp. President and General Manager Tom Fitzgerald confirmed that forwards Kevin Rooney and Luke Glendening, along with goaltenders Georgi Romanov and Adam Scheel, will join the team’s veterans when camp opens on September 17.
Rooney, age 32, played the last three seasons with the Calgary Flames organization. Last season, he appeared in 70 games for Calgary and averaged nearly two minutes per game on the penalty kill. Rooney began his NHL career with New Jersey during the 2016-17 season and participated in 95 regular-season games for the Devils through 2019-20. Over his NHL career, he has recorded 60 points in 330 games.
Glendening, who is 36 years old, spent his previous two seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He led all Lightning skaters last season with a face-off percentage of 57 percent and ranked fifth on the team in hits. The Grand Rapids native has totaled 166 points over 864 regular-season NHL games and brings significant playoff experience, having played in the Stanley Cup Playoffs each of the past four seasons for Tampa Bay and Dallas. Since debuting in 2013-14, Glendening has appeared in 50 postseason contests and was part of a Calder Cup-winning team with Grand Rapids in the AHL in 2013.
Romanov, age 25, comes from two seasons within the San Jose Sharks organization at both NHL and AHL levels. He made his NHL debut with San Jose in April 2024. In his AHL career with San Jose, Romanov holds a goals-against average of 3.12 and a .904 save percentage across 50 games. At the NHL level over ten appearances across two seasons, he has posted a goals-against average of 3.53.
Scheel, a native of Lakewood, Ohio, played last season for Colorado’s AHL affiliate where he achieved a record of ten wins, two losses, and two overtime losses over fourteen games while maintaining a goals-against average of 2.62. The goaltender also saw action in nineteen ECHL games for Utah during the most recent season. Since turning professional after college hockey at North Dakota—where he was named NCHC Goaltender of the Year in 2020-21—Scheel has played more than one hundred AHL games.
“All four players will join New Jersey veterans when they report to training camp on September 17,” said Tom Fitzgerald.
