Members of the New Jersey Devils’ hockey operations and amateur scouting staff gathered at the Prudential Center to discuss draft-eligible players for the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft. The team aims to compile a comprehensive list ranking each player from best to worst.
Mark Dennehy, the Devils’ Chief Scout, instructed his team to “just get the list right,” initiating discussions that will continue over several weeks. The scouts will evaluate every potential prospect, ensuring their final list is accurate and aligned with their assessments.
Dennehy highlighted the importance of sharing opinions during these meetings: “We do want people to share their opinions, then we’ll have some fervent debate about those opinions.” He acknowledged that changes might occur up until draft day based on combines and World Championships performances.
The regional scouts play a crucial role in this process, having spent a year compiling detailed reports on prospects. They gather insights from various sources, including coaches and even Zamboni drivers. This extensive groundwork allows them to better understand each player’s capabilities.
The scouting department employs both traditional evaluations and modern technology in their analysis. Dennehy praised the analytics team’s contribution: “I give our analytics and IT department huge kudos… there’s nothing that our software can’t do.”
With remote drafting becoming more common due to previous experiences like COVID-19, Dennehy appreciates having all staff members present in one room during decision-making: “Hopefully, that’ll give us the upper hand in making the right decisions.”
As they prepare for the 2025 NHL Draft, Dennehy emphasizes the dedication of his scouts: “These guys don’t do this to get rich. They do this because they have a passion for hockey.” Ultimately, their goal is aligned with winning a Stanley Cup for the organization.
