The New Jersey Devils held a practice session at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House inside Prudential Center following several recent roster changes. The team, with a reduced training camp roster, took to the ice for a morning practice that provided an early look at what the opening day lineup could be.
Forward Jesper Bratt commented on practicing with the full NHL group: “It’s exciting. It’s been split groups for a couple weeks so it’s good to get out there with the full group, just see everyone all together. It was probably one of the best practices of the year. So, it was a lot of fun.”
Despite the trimmed roster, head coach Sheldon Keefe emphasized that decisions are not yet final. “I’ve told them that while decisions had to be made to separate the group today for the efficiency of practice, decisions aren’t final both within this week and the season at large,” Keefe said.
The Devils have two preseason games remaining: one against the New York Rangers on Thursday and another against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, which will start at 12:30 p.m. ET instead of its original time. According to Keefe, Thursday’s lineup will resemble Group 1 from practice while Saturday’s game will feature Group 2 with some adjustments. “Everyone, for the most part, will be getting in a game this week,” he added.
Among those drawing attention during camp is Nathan Legare. Head coach Keefe noted Legare’s strong performance: “There’s no doubt that he has played to his strengths,” Keefe said. “Understanding who you are, understanding what your role is or might be and owning and being a star in that role. I think he’s done that. He’s a guy that we’re talking about daily because of the work that he’s done.” Legare has recorded one goal, two points and ten penalty minutes in three exhibition games so far.
Keefe also expressed confidence in Legare’s readiness: “Whether he starts here with us or not, we’re confident he can play games,” Keefe said.
Bratt reflected on expectations for this season after last year’s results: “Every year my expectations are high. I think we learned a lot from last year. We all have some fire in the tank about just really how last season went I think we took a step last year but we’re far from where we want to be.”
Lenni Hameenaho spoke about his first NHL game experience: “It was really nice experience to play in our first game here at home. It was really nice.”
The Devils continue their preparations as they approach their final preseason matchups before determining their regular-season roster.
