The New Jersey Devils were defeated by the San Jose Sharks 5-2 in a game held in San Jose. The Sharks took an early lead, with William Eklund scoring just 41 seconds into the first period after capitalizing on a turnover and beating Devils goaltender Jake Allen. Philipp Kurashev and Alexander Wennberg added goals for the Sharks, giving them a three-goal advantage before Dawson Mercer scored for the Devils on a power play tip-in.
In the second period, Will Smith extended the Sharks’ lead to 4-1 by scoring on a rebound. Dmitry Orlov’s shot from the side boards was tipped in front by Tyler Toffoli, making it 5-1 for San Jose.
Dawson Mercer scored his second goal of the night in the third period, tipping in a shot from Dougie Hamilton to reduce the deficit to 5-2.
The Devils’ lineup included Palat, Hughes, Bratt, Meier, Hischier, Mercer, Gritsyuk, Lammikko, Brown, Cotter, Glendening, Noesen as forwards; Siegenthaler, Hamilton, Dillon, Nemec, Hughes and Casey as defensemen; with Allen and Markstrom as goaltenders.
The Sharks fielded Toffoli, Celebrini, Smith; Eklund, Wennberg, Kurashev; Skinner, Dellandrea, Graf; Goodrow, Giles and Reaves up front. Their defensive pairings were Orlov-Liljegren; Ferraro-Klingberg; Dickinson-Mukhamadullin. Nedeljkovic and Askarov served as their goaltenders.
After this loss on the road against San Jose the Devils will look to regroup for their upcoming games.
